With 2025 just around the corner, people are beginning to count down until midnight for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The excitement and eagerness to begin with a clean slate has got people busy planning for the new year ahead. As we gear up for big New Year’s Eve parties and find the best spot to watch fireworks displays at midnight, such events can be a stressful time for pets.

While the loudest night of the year is filled with hope and anticipation for many, it's important to keep our four-legged friend comfortable and safe. Although it can be challenging, pets also need a soothing atmosphere. Here are some of the things that you can do to ensure that your furry friend starts the new year safely.

Tip 1: Keep your Pets Indoors

With fireworks and loud noises at the forefront during New Year celebrations, pets can be susceptible to stress.

This can also cause them to panic and find an immediate escape from the environment due to fear. If doors and windows are not properly secured, this may prompt them to go missing during the celebration. To prevent this, ensure that all doors and windows are monitored. Ask guests to be mindful when entering or exiting your home.

If possible, let them stay in an extra room away from the loud noises and cramped spaces in your household.

Tip 2: Be Mindful of Possible Hazards

During parties, curious pets can sneak away with party decorations like confetti, tassels, and balloons. If such decorations are ingested, this might cause an intestinal blockage and put their health at risk. To prevent this, make sure to put away the party debris immediately once the party ends.

Additionally, pets may also get away with some foods like chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, and baked goods with xylitol. These foods, including alcohol, are deemed harmful to our furry friends.

Per Filipino tradition, firework displays are inevitable and will surely distract pets. Block out flashing lights by shutting windows and closing the curtains inside your house. You may also play a pet-friendly television show like “Bluey.”

Tip 3: Secure the Premises

Double-check your gates and fences for possible vulnerabilities to prevent pets from escaping. Circling back to Tip 1, make sure that your guests are informed about leaving the doors closed at all times when entering or exiting a room.

If possible, put up a sign at your door to remind people. Make sure that your pets are monitored at all times.
