The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) revived the AFP Counter-Intelligence Group (AFPCIG) on Friday, January 18, an important intelligence unit that aims to watch for espionage and sabotage in the military or government.

In a ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo, AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized the important role of the AFPCIG in securing the nation in an ever-shifting global landscape and encouraged its members to strive for excellence, embrace innovations, and uphold the highest standards of integrity.

“To the valiant men and women of the AFPCIG, the security of our beloved nation rests upon your capable shoulders. Your tireless efforts will ensnare any threats and guarantee the safety of our treasured citizens," said Brawner in his speech.

"May the AFP Counterintelligence Group ascend to unimaginable heights, preserving the rights and liberties of our great nation,” the AFP Chief added.

Meanwhile, AFP Public Affairs Office Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad said AFPCIG was revived by the commitment of the commander in chief, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to secure the country.

The reactivation of AFP-CIG was first developed during the time of former President Corazon Aquino.

After being built at the height of the coup attempts in 1989, the AFPCIG was dissolved during the time of former president Fidel Ramos, and the Presidential Task Force on Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence (PTFIC) was set up to pursue organized crime groups, usually composed of former police and soldiers.

During the AFP's anniversary in December 2023, Brawner announced the reactivation of the counterintelligence group.
