Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt reached a settlement in their divorce, eight years after the actress filed to end their two-year marriage.

Reports from media outlets in the U.S. said that Jolie’s lawyers said the ex-couple had signed off on their divorce on Monday, December 30. In a statement from PEOPLE, Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon highlighted the former’s efforts to find peace and healing for their family since leaving Pitt.

“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family," Simon told PEOPLE.

As the divorce saga may be drawing to a close, Simon emphasized how this is just one part of a long ongoing process that began eight years ago.

"This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over." he highlighted.

The world was left in shock in September 2016 when Jolie filed for dissolution of marriage a day after the plane flight. Media reports indicated that Jolie claimed that Pitt was abusive to her and their six children. It was alleged that Pitt hit his son Maddox, who was 15 at the time when they were on a flight from France to Los Angeles

The FBI and social workers examined the claims, but no further actions were taken. Jolie also declined to press charges against Pitt, while the latter denied the allegations.

Since the filing, Jolie’s lawyers mentioned that "neither Jolie nor any of the children have ever stepped foot back in Miraval, which was their home until then.”

In 2017, they released a joint statement, citing that they had reached an agreement to handle their divorce in a private forum. The document also mentioned preserving the privacy rights of their children and family, adding that they will be keeping all court documents confidential and will be engaging with a private judge to make any necessary legal decisions.

It also mentioned that the ex-couple is committed to acting as a “united front to effectuate recovery and reunification.”

They were declared legally single in 2019 but still had to finalize their divorce.

The extensive and messy process of Jolie and Pitt’s divorce escalated further with the legal battle over their vineyard, Chateau Miraval. The ex-couple bought the vineyard back in 2008.
