Attorney Karlo Nograles has resigned as Chairman of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), Malacañang confirmed on Monday.
The resignation was announced by Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cesar Chavez in a message to reporters.
In his resignation letter, Nograles described the decision as "difficult" and expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the opportunity to serve alongside "dedicated public servants."
"It has been a privilege and an honor to serve our countrymen as part of the institution mandated by the Constitution to promote morale, efficiency, integrity, responsiveness, progressiveness, and courtesy in the civil service," Nograles wrote.
"This experience has moved me to return to my roots in Davao City where I hope to bring and apply the lessons I have learned in my tenure as the head of the Commission, as well as my two decades in government," he added.
Over the past two years, Nograles noted that he had witnessed the commitment and hard work of CSC personnel across the country.
"Together we initiated meaningful reforms that the undersigned believes will benefit our nation for years to come," he said.
Nograles, a former lawmaker, held the position of Cabinet Secretary during the Duterte administration from 2018 to 2022, while also taking on the role of acting Presidential spokesperson from 2021 to 2022.
Before his appointment to the Civil Service Commission (CSC), Nograles represented the 1st District of Davao City in Congress from 2010 to 2018.
Senior Commissioner Atty. Aileen Lizada will temporarily assume the role of acting chairman of the CSC.
