Carlo Paalam has ended his Tokyo 2020 Olympics stint with a silver medal after falling short to Great Britain's Galal Yafai via a 4-1 split decision in the boxing tournament's men's flyweight final on Saturday at the Kokugikan Arena.

Paalam, who got knocked down in the first round but was quick to recover before Yafai relentlessly gave a blow-by-blow pace in the last two rounds.

The Philippines has so far wrapped up its campaign with four medals – led by Hidilyn Diaz who won a gold medal in the women's weightlifting 55-kilogram event.

Nesthy Petecio earned a silver medal in the women's boxing featherweight division, the first Filipina boxer to do so, followed by middleweight Eumir Marcial who took home the bronze.

Hailing from Cagayan de Oro, Paala, at the age of 23, was the youngest in the Philippine boxing team.

He used to pick up garbage with his father in their hometown before he was introduced to boxing at the age of nine.
