The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Sunday called on Filipinos in Syria to maintain communication with the Philippine Embassy in Damascus following reports of significant developments in the country, including the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"The Department of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor, with concern, ongoing developments in Syria," the DFA said in an official statement.

The DFA called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could lead to further violence, emphasizing the need to prevent civilian casualties.

"We express concern regarding the situation of our Filipinos in Syria and advise them to take the necessary precautions and stay in contact with the Philippine Embassy in Damascus," the statement added.

The DFA continues to monitor the situation closely as reports from rebel forces claim to have overthrown President Bashar al-Assad's government and taken control of Damascus.

According to a Reuters report, Syrian rebel forces declared the end of Assad’s regime after 24 years in power, citing their capture of the capital, Damascus. The rebels reportedly continued operations in strategic areas, including Hama, Homs, and the Deraa countryside.

President Assad is believed to have fled Damascus on Sunday, though his destination remains unknown.

Witnesses reported scenes of celebration in the capital, with thousands gathering to chant "Freedom" and celebrate what they described as liberation from decades of Assad family rule.

The Al-Rawda Presidential Palace was reportedly accessed by civilians, with some looting furniture, and a major prison outside Damascus was said to have released detainees.
