The Directors’ Guild of the Philippines (DGPI) expressed their support for the art of filmmaking and creative freedom in storytelling, despite ‘Lost Sabungeros’ screening cancelation at the 20th Cinemalaya Film Festival.

In a statement released on Thursday, the guild discussed their concern about the intimidation tactics employed by people who seek to stifle the voice of filmmakers. The cancellation of the documentary film poses a threat to those who dare to “challenge the entrenched” through initiatives like such.

“Our thoughts and empathy are with the filmmaker, the producers, the festival, and the audience affected by this distressing situation. The safety of our creative community is paramount, and it is through collective vigilance and solidarity that we will overcome these challenges,” their statement read.

The DGPI urged fellow filmmakers to continue their “passionate pursuit of storytelling”, in spite of threats and intimidation surrounding their cases.

“The DGPI calls upon all filmmakers and our society to protect this freedom and democratic space and to remain brave and resolute in their creative endeavors. It is through the courage to confront uncomfortable truths and address societal issues that we contribute to a more informed and empathetic world,” they said.

“In the face of adversity, we must hold steadfast to our commitment to creativity and the pursuit of truth. The DGPI remains dedicated to fostering an environment where artistic expression can flourish freely and securely,” they ended.

Lost Sabungeros is the first investigative documentary film produced by GMA Public Affairs, focusing on the sudden disappearance of 34 cockfighters in 2021. The film was supposed to make its debut at the 20th Cinemalaya Film Festival from August 8 to 9.
