MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Tourism (DOT) is keen on working towards positioning the Philippines as a “Cruise Tourism Hub” and “Gateway to Southeast Asia”, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said.

In her keynote address during the official opening of the Seatrade Cruise (STC) Asia 2024 on Tuesday (Nov. 12), held in Taguig City, Frasco shared her vision for the cruise industry in the country, inspired by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s commitment of the government to cooperate with the cruise tourism industry.

“The President’s words underscore our shared commitment to a cruise industry that is inclusive and rooted in sustainable practices, where we streamline operations, enhance efficiencies, improve the overall tourist experience while preserving our natural and cultural heritage. With this, we aim to establish the Philippines as a hub for cruise tourism and a place where innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth converge,” Frasco said.

Frasco also shared the Tourism Department’s vision of the Philippines not just as a destination, but as an “immersive gateway” to the vibrant cultures and history of the region.

“The Philippines is not just a destination—it is an experience, a gateway to the rich history and culture not just of our country but of Southeast Asia.

Through your collaboration and commitment, we are positioning ourselves as a hub for cruises, where each journey blends natural beauty with cultural depth and the unparalleled warmth of Filipino hospitality,” Secretary Frasco said as she addressed the delegates who attended the event.

During the conference, Frasco highlighted ongoing initiatives by the Philippine government to upgrade ports, develop world-class tourism infrastructure, and foster a “welcoming environment” for international cruise lines.

Secretary Frasco also praised Filipino cruise ship crew members as they showcased the Filipino Brand of Excellence in the world stage.

““We take great pride in the Filipino crew members who serve on many of the cruise ships around the world, delivering a cruise experience that resonates with travelers and contributes significantly to the success of leading cruise lines, Frasco enthused.

According to data from the DOT, the country has scheduled 109 cruise calls across 40 destinations for 2024, with other confirmed schedules extending to 2027, showcasing varied attractions, “from Boracay’s pristine beaches to Tubbataha’s UNESCO-protected reefs and the emerging sites of Ticao Island and Culion,” the DOT Chief noted.

The three-day Seatrade event was attended by over 350 international delegates from over 30 countries, from leading cruise lines, port agents, itinerary planners, and other stakeholders, the DOT mentioned.

The event served as a key platform for discussing Asia’s growing cruise potential, and included topics such as Southeast Asia cruise tourism development, resurgence of Asia cruise source markets, the resumption of East Asia cruise operations, financing port development and improving port infrastructure, developing emerging destination experiences, expedition and boutique cruising, and outbound cruise tourism, the DOT added.
