The South Korean drama “Joseon Exorcist” has been canceled after two episodes following the historical distortion controversy.

In a report from Korean media outlet Soompi, the network SBS, which airs the show, issued a statement stating they are officially cancelling the drama.

“As SBS deeply recognizes the severity of the current situation [regarding the drama], we have decided to terminate our broadcasting rights contract for “Joseon Exorcist” and cancel all broadcasts of the drama,” the statement reads.

“At the moment, SBS has already paid most of the fees for the broadcasting rights to the drama in question, and the production company has already completed 80 percent of filming,” it added.

Set in the early 15th century in Korea with characters based on historical figures, Joseon Exorcist received backlash after it first aired on Monday for their portrayal of Korean history using Chinese products such as century eggs and Chinese mooncakes.

Due to their inaccurate portrayal, around 20 companies who previously pledged advertisement to the show pulled out.

“Although we are concerned about the financial losses incurred by both the broadcast network and the production company, as well as the gap in our programming, SBS feels a heavy responsibility as a public broadcast network, and we are informing you that we have decided to cancel the program,” the Korean network stated.

The series directed by Shin Kyung-soo and written by Park Gye-ok, stars Jang Dong-yoon, Park Sung-hoon and Kam Woo-sung.
