President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. met with United States President Joe Biden in New York City on Thursday morning (US time) on the sidelines of the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In a statement, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said the two leaders are expected to discuss issues such as mutual cooperation, trade, and direct investments.

The Chief Executive, in a Facebook post, thanked Biden for meeting with him.

"We talked about the deeply rooted relationship of both our countries and the millions of Filipino-Americans and Filipinos residing in the US that tie us together. We are optimistic that we can further strengthen our alliance as we work together towards improving the quality of life for both our peoples," Marcos said.

A Reuters report quoted Biden as saying, as the two men began their talks, that he wanted to talk about the South China Sea, where China is exerting its influence, as well as COVID-19 and renewable energy. He thanked Marcos for opposing Russia's war in Ukraine.

Marcos is accompanied by House Speaker Martin Romualdez, and presidential son and Ilocos Rep. Ferdinand Alexander "Sandro" Marcos III.
