President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially accepted the resignation of National Police Commission (Napolcom) Commissioner Edilberto Leonardo.

The acceptance of the resignation was communicated through a letter signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on October 8 addressed to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

"This refers to the letter dated 04 October 2024 of Mr. Edilberto Dela Cruz Leonardo, tendering his resignation as Commissioner," the letter read.

"On behalf of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., this is to inform you that his resignation has been accepted, effective immediately," Bersamin added.

NAPOLCOM Vice Chairperson Alberto Bernardo first communicated Leonardo's resignation before the House panel during the hearing on October 11.

Leonardo and former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) General Manager Royina Garma was previously linked to the assassination of former PCSO Board Secretary Wesley Barayuga in 2020.

Additionally, he was implicated in the killing of three Chinese drug convicts at the Davao Prison and Penal Farm in August 2016.

He was cited for contempt by the quad-committee for allegedly lying and was ordered to be detained at the Batasang Pambansa Complex.
