Mayon Volcano in Albay province, which remains under Alert Level 3, had 295 rockfalls and 3 volcanic earthquakes within 24 hours, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’s (Phivolcs) latest bulletin issued Monday, July 3.
The number of rockfalls recorded has slightly decreased, from 397 to 295.
Phivolcs said the Mayon Volcano also persistently oozes lava flow down its slopes, and it advanced to 2,700 kilometers along Mi-si Gully and 1,300 kilometers along Bonga Gully.
The continued lava feed caused debris to collapse to approximately 4,000 kilometers from Mount Mayon’s summit crater.
Meanwhile, the state seismologist also recorded 2 dome-collapse pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) that lasted for 2 minutes and 2 lava front PCDs that produced 200-meter-high light-brown plumes.
Mayon Volcano summit crater’s also exhibited continuous moderate degassing which generated 500 meters-tall steam-laden plumes before moving in the west and west-northwest direction.
About 962 sulfur dioxide was recorded, slightly higher than the 864 recorded earlier.
“Longer-term ground deformation parameters based on EDM, precise leveling, continuous GPS, and electronic tilt monitoring indicate that Mayon is still inflated, especially on the northwest and southeast,” Phivolcs said.
The state seismologist maintains Alert Level 3 over Mayon Volcano as volcanic activities have yet to ease.
It continuously reminds the public of hazards that may occur such as rock falls or landslides or avalanches; ballistic fragments; lava flows and lava fountaining; PDCs; and moderate-sized explosions.
Phivolcs also warned that heavy and prolonged rainfall could trigger lahars.
