The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) eyes to recommend adjusting the work hours of national government agencies in Metro Manila to an earlier time to help alleviate traffic congestion in the major thoroughfares.
In April of the previous year, the Metro Manila local government units (LGUs) adopted a work schedule from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes noted that during the implementation of the said working hours, traffic conditions improved with a 1.23% reduction in travel time and a 3.69% increase in travel speed on major roads like EDSA.
"Kung lahat po ng national government agencies ay mag-iimplement ng 7 am - 4 pm, doon po mararamdaman talaga 'yung magandang epekto nito. Nakita niyo 'yung datos, halos kalahating milyon po ang empleyado ng national government agencies dito sa Metro Manila," Artes said during the Metro Manila Council (MMC) meeting on Thursday.
Furthermore, should national government agencies adopt the same working hours, the MMDA predicts a 37.15% decrease in private motorists during peak hours, which would be equivalent to 175,918 employees.
According to the MMDA Chairman, they will send a letter to Malacañang once they have obtained the consensus of the mayors.
"We'll submit the report and the recommendation to the Office of the President," Artes mentioned.
