The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has logged 37 volcanic earthquakes as Mt. Kanlaon persists in activity.
The tremors were registered from Sunday to Monday midnight. Moreover, the volcano released 3,639 tonnes of sulfur dioxide, exceeding the 3,469 tonnes emitted on Saturday, January 4. An immense plume 500 meters high issued from it, which drifted southwest and west, according to PHIVOLCS.
Currently at Alert Level 3, Kanlaon is prone to sudden, explosive eruption, lava flow, pyroclastic density current, ash- and rock-fall, and lahar, should there be heavy downpour.
The Kanlaon city government has already launched its Oplan Exodus, or “Exit Operations During Uncertainties Strategy,” entailing the forced evacuation of locals, in case the volcano Alert Level is raised.
