Navotas City Mayor Toby Tiangco announced on Sunday that he tested positive for COVID-19.
"Ikinalulungkot ko pong ipaalam sa lahat na base sa RT-PCR test, ako po ay postibo sa COVID-19," Tiangco said in an announcement on social media.
(I am saddened to announce that based on my RT-PCR test, I tested positive for COVID-19.)
The city mayor, who said he is immune-compromised and has severe asthma, shared that he took an antigen test on Sunday afternoon that yielded a positive result, which he later confirmed through an RT-PCR test.
Despite his positive result, Tiangco said he will still monitor his responsibilities as mayor.
"Bilang COVID patient, sasailalim po ako sa 14-days isolation ngunit hanggang makakaya, gagampanan ko pa rin po ang tungkulin nating i-monitor at pangunahan ang ating COVID response at iba pang responsibilidad bilang Mayor," he said.
(As a COVID patient, I will undergo 14-day isolation but when I still can, I will fulfill my duties in overseeing and leading our COVID response and other responsibilities as mayor.)
He also extended his apologies to the people he had close contact with over the past few days, urging them to watch over their health.
"Ako po ay humihingi ng paumanhin sa lahat ng aking nakaharap noong nakaraang mga araw at nakikiusap na obserbahan nang mabuti ang inyong kalusugan. Kung meron kayong nararamdamang kakaiba, sumangguni po agad sa doctor," he said.
(I apologize to everyone that I faced over the past days and I urge them to observe their health. If they feel different, please go see a doctor.)
He then appealed to the public to "double or triple" their caution, following health and safety protocols, and get vaccinated against COVID-19.
