Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio has a chance to win the second gold medal of the Philippines in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
Petecio advanced to the finals of the women's featherweight boxing event after defeating Irma Testa of Italy via split decision, 4-1, on Saturday, July 31, at the Kokugikan Arena.
Four judges gave a score of 29-28 in favor of Petecio while the remaining judge scored the three-round semifinals bout, 29-28, in favor of Testa.
Petecio will face Sena Irie of Japan in the gold-medal match on Tuesday, August 3.
Irie earned a spot in the finals after defeating Karriss Artingstall of Great Britain via split decision, 3-2, during her semifinals match.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque congratulated Petecio for her victory.
"We congratulate Nesthy Petecio in winning the women’s boxing featherweight semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics and securing a second Olympic medal for the Philippines," Roque said in a statement.
"The whole nation is praying for our athletes as their quest for an Olympic gold medal continues," the Malacanang official added.
