Around 10,000 employees will be provided temporary jobs under the emergency employment program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) due to being displaced by the oil spill in Oriental Mindoro.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma, through a phone interview, mentioned that over P100 million has been earmarked for the cash-for-work program.

Moreover, the DOLE chief said that their office is expected to come up with the final list of beneficiaries soon, stating that the profiling of affected individuals is almost finished.

According to Laguesma, the assistance will also benefit ambulant and market-stall fish vendors, as well as employees of beach resorts.

Beneficiaries will be assigned work for a minimum of 10 days and up to 30 days. They will also be given the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).

Last February 28, the M/T Princess Empress sank off the coast of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.

The incident caused industrial oil to spill, affecting residents and disrupting livelihoods in the area.
