The overall electricity rate will drop to P0.22 per kilowatt hour (kWh) this January, the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said on Monday.
The Meralco Vice President (VP) and Head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga and VP and Head of Utility Economics Lawrence Fernandez announced the good news for the month of January to customers.
Zaldarriaga said that the price went down by 22 centavos per kHw in January.
“Gusto lang po namin ianunsyo sa ating mga customers na mayroon tayong pagbaba na halos 22 centavos kada kilowatt hour (kHw). Ito ay hopefully magandang balita sa mga kababayan natin,” Zaldarriaga said.
According to the company, the electricity bills will fall based on consumption and price reduction. For 200 kHw users, the net adjustment reduction will be P44.
The rest of the rates are as follows:
- 300 kHw - P66
- 400 kHw - P89
- 500 kHw - P112
“Ang dahilan ng reduction natin sa overall rates ay primarily due to the reduction in the generation charge na bumaba ng 13 centavos per kWh. Very slight reduction sa transmission [at] 0.0032,” he said.
“Taxes po ay six centavos halos yung reduction, dala na rin po ‘yan ng reduction sa generation cause, and then a reduction in the tax component,” he added.
Moreover, the December supply month saw a reduction of almost 16 centavos in Independent Power Producers (IPPs). Zaldarriaga mentioned that the reduction was almost P1.
Meanwhile, Fernandez mentioned that one of the reasons why the generation charge for January dropped was due to the spot market prices. The holiday season also contributed to the decrease.
After two consecutive months of rate increases, the overall rate dipped by P0.2189 kHw to P11.7482, from December 2024’s P11.9617 per kHw.
