The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) closely monitors the status of Kanlaon Volcano on the island of Negros.

PHIVOLCS officer-in-charge Teresito Bacolcol revealed on Monday, June 19, that Kanlaon Volcano spews a higher amount of sulfur dioxide than normal.

"For the last three surveys namin, hindi bumababa sa 1,000. Normally, ang Kanlaon Volcano nag-spew out lang siya ng 50 tons per day of sulfur dioxide," Bacolcol explained during DZRH's Damdaming Bayan.

"Itong more than 1,000 tons per day of sulfur dioxide is quite significant," he stressed.

Bacolcol said that PHIVOLCS could place Mt. Kanlaon under Alert Level 2 status if PHIVOLCS will continue to observe an increased amount of sulfur dioxide emissions, and will register more volcanic earthquakes.

"May abnormality doon sa pagbuga niya ng sulfur dioxide. Tinitignan natin ito ng maigi kasi wala naman masyadong earthquakes pero mataas yung sulfur dioxide emission niya," Bacolcol added.

From Sunday, June 18, to Monday, PHIVOLCS only recorded five volcanic earthquakes in Kanlaon Volcano, which remains under Alert Level 1.
