The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday, July 10 reported that it observed heightened activities in Mayon Volcano, with 325 rockfalls and 109 volcanic earthquakes over the past 24-hour period.
The number of volcanic quakes significantly swell, from 26 recorded prior to 109.
Meanwhile, the rock falls slightly went up to 325 from 302.
Thirty-three dome-collapse PDCs were also recorded in Mount Mayon, higher than the 3 recorded earlier.
Phivolcs said the PDCs went down south Mi-isi and southeastern Bonga Gullies within 3.3 kilometers from the Mayon Volcano’s summit crater for about 1 to 4 minutes.
The country’s active volcano also produced 943 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux since July 9, and 800-meter high steam-laden plumes before it moved toward the general west.
“Repetitive pulse tremor was recorded since 11:00 PM (PST) of July 8, 2023 and subsided around 3:00 AM (PST) July 10, 2023,” the state seismologist said.
The Mayon Volcano’s summit crater unceasingly spawns very slow lava, reaching 2,800 kilometers along Mi-Si Gully and 1,400 kilometers along Bonga Gully.
The said lava flow pushed debris to collapse for approximately 4,000 kilometers from the summit crater along the Basud channel.
“Short-term observations from EDM and electronic tiltmeter monitoring show the upper slopes to be inflating since February 2023. Longer-term ground deformation parameters based on EDM, precise leveling, continuous GPS, and electronic tilt monitoring indicate that Mayon is still inflated, especially on the northwest and southeast,” Phivolcs said.
Alert Level 3 is still maintained over the Mayon Volcano.
The Alert Level 3 has been up for a month now, since Phivolcs raised it on June 8 due to its high level of unrest.
