Heeding to Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos' call, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr. on Thursday submitted his courtesy resignation.

On Wednesday, Abalos urged generals and full colonels of the PNP to submit their courtesy resignation amid the possibility of their involvement in the illegal drug trade and as part of the agency's internal cleansing.

In a media briefing, Azurin confirmed that he and the members of his commands have all submitted their courtesy resignations as well as their organization’s number two man, Deputy Chief for Administration (DCA) Lt. Gen. Rhodel Sermonio.

"Actually, lahat kami rito, ‘yung command group ko, we have already submitted. Honestly, nauna pa nga si DCA (Deputy Chief for Administration) sa akin eh. Nauna pa ‘yung command group ko na nag-submit sa akin," Azurin told reporters.

According to Azurin, he met with the other PNP colonels and generals, and “there were commitments” to tender their courtesy resignation. He said he is aiming for officials to submit their resignations not later than January 31.

Abalos, during his media conference, said a committee will conduct an investigation on all these police officers, and the courtesy resignation of those with proven links to the illegal drug trade will be accepted.
