Coach Josh Reyes will no longer call the shots for the Gilas Pilipinas Boys team.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced on Friday, September 20, that the Gilas Pilipinas Youth program will undergo restructuring after Reyes stepped down as head coach of the Philippine national boys' basketball team.
The departure of Reyes came weeks after the Philippines finished at 10th place in the 2024 FIBA U-18 Asia Cup in Amman, Jordan.
"We thank coach Josh for his service to the SBP and to the country in leading the Gilas Youth program for the past six years," SBP President Al Panlilio said.
While Reyes will no longer oversee the Gilas Pilipinas Boys squad, he will still remain with the SBP as an assistant coach of Philippine national men's basketball team.
"While he leaves his role as head coach, he will still be part of the SBP organization as an assistant to coach Tim Cone for Gilas Pilipinas Men," Panlilio said.
Meanwhile, SBP Executive Director Erika Dy assured that the association already started discussions regarding the new head coach of the Gilas Pilipinas Boys program.
"We thank coach Josh for helping us streamline our processes as this will be valuable to the program moving forward," Dy said.
"The focus remains to be continuity and synergy with Gilas Men and a stronger connection with our current Grassroots Program under coach Norman Black,” she added.
