Seniors make lanterns from recycled materials to support family
by Daylight Abas22 December 2022

Two senior citizens showcased their creative versions of Christmas lanterns made out of recycled materials.

Reynaldo Magcuilat, 69, and Emiliana Esguerra, 78, use old plastic bottles and straws to form beautiful parols.

Magcuilat, called "Lolo Dodong" by others, sells newspapers along the street of a community in Quezon City together with his older brother for a living.

To get by, even more, Lolo Dodong also picks up scattered plastic bottles to make amazing Christmas decorations.

He thoroughly cleans the bottles so he can cut and shape them into stars, which he learned from someone that pushed him to make parols for around five years now.

Meanwhile, Esguerra, also called "Lola Hule," uses straws to make other decors such as flowers and chandeliers.

She has been making plastic parols for a long time now that she even passed her creativity to her children who are now helping her. This has also become their family pastime.
