Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that he aims to reduce the number of generals in the Philippine National Police (PNP) to just 25 from the current total of 133.

Remulla stated that this initiative aims to strengthen the organizational structure of the PNP. He explained that many current generals do not hold any command positions.

“There are a lot of generals now without commands," Remull said in a press briefing following his sectoral meeting in Malacañang on Tuesday.

"Mayroon tayong Area Police Command (APC) na walang tao sa ilalim nila. Marami tayong lugar na redundancies na kailangan i-trim down," he added.

He stated that this is just one of his proposals and part of the planned reforms for the PNP.

However, Remulla clarified that this is still just a recommendation and has not yet been approved by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

He further stated that it is a 32-year-old law that needs to be revisited, referring to Republic Act (RA) 6975, also known as the DILG Act of 1991, which established the PNP.

When asked about the future of active police generals, the DILG chief noted that nothing is conclusive at this stage, as they are currently assessing the reorganization proposal.
