Nine out of ten adult Filipinos, or 93%, have personally experienced the impacts of climate change in the past three years, the Social Weather Station revealed in the December 10-14, 2022 survey.
They discovered that 17% of people reported experiencing a severe impact from climate change in the last three years, 52% reported a moderate impact, and 24% reported a minimal impact. Six percent didn't notice any changes.
The percentage of Filipinos reported experiencing climate change increased by 6% in March 2017 and 8% in 2013 the same month.
It was also found that 88% agreed that they can do something to reduce climate risk, with 10% undecided, and 3% disagreeing.
Meanwhile, 3 out of 4 adult Filipinos, or 76%, think that humanity could do something to stop or slow down climate change if they tried.
Awareness of climate change solutions
The percentages of people who were aware of ways to mitigate the effects of climate change were very high:
- 95% for planting trees in the appropriate places and protecting forests
- 95% for saving energy or electricity at home
- 93% for walking, bicycling, or using public transportation
- 91% for reducing, reusing, repairing, and recycling
- 86% for throwing away less food
Most people who are aware of each solution said their families use it to lessen the effects of climate change:
- 88% Save energy or electricity at home
- 81% Walk, cycle, or take public transportation
- 75% Throw away less food
- 74% Reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle
- 63% Plant trees in the appropriate locations and protect forests
The sample size of the survey is 1,200 adults nationwide with a 2.8% sampling error.
