In a recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS), it was revealed that 79% of Filipino adults hold positive views towards gays and lesbians.
Released on Friday, the survey also highlighted that only 7% of the respondents expressed mistrust towards gays and lesbians, while 13% remained undecided on the matter.
Moreover, 73% of the participants acknowledged the contributions made by the LGBTQIA+ community to the progress of society. Only 8% disagreed with this statement, and 19% were undecided.
While these results reflect an overall positive sentiment, the survey also touched upon other perceptions.
Around 43% of the respondents believed that sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, are primarily associated with the LGBTQIA+ community.
Additionally, 40% expressed a desire for their gay or lesbian family members to change and conform to heterosexuality, while 26% held the misconception that being gay or lesbian is contagious.
SWS emphasized that the non-commissioned survey carries a sampling error of ±2.8%, highlighting the need for continued efforts to promote understanding and acceptance within society.
The survey results comes alongside the celebration of Pride Month in the country.
