The City of Tacloban was plunged in complete darkness just before the new year arrived, on account of a severed power line.
Beginning at 10:11 PM of New Year’s Eve, the blackout only ended at 7:45 AM on the first of January.
One of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) conductors, specifically the one two meters away from the insulators installed in Diit Village, along the Babatngon-Apitong 69kV line, was cut, triggering the sweeping power outage.
At 10:15 PM, the NGCP said it had sent personnel to inspect the damaged line and was seeking the swift resolution to the issue.
Netizens mistakenly directed their complaints at the local distribution utility, the Leyte II Electric Cooperative (Leyeco II), likely assuming it was responsible for the blackout.
Leyeco II clarified that it was NGCP, the transmission service, whose lines had caused the almost 10-hour power disruption.
