Makati gov't asked to not sabotage transition of Embo barangays
by Ellicia Del Mundo16 August 2023

The local government unit (LGU) of Taguig on Tuesday asked the Makati City LGU to stop sabotaging the transition process of the 10 barangays from Makati to Taguig with fake news and false narratives.

In a statement, Taguig Public Information Office (PIO) refuted Makati City Administrator Claro Certesa's claim that Taguig government rejected Makati government's offer to provide free uniforms, shoes, and other school supplies to the affected 30,000 students from 10 Embo barangays during a meeting held last July.

The said meeting was attended by Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano, Makati Mayor Abigail 'Abby' Binay, and Department of Education (DepEd) officials.

According to Taguig PIO, Binay promptly threatened Taguig LGU that she would close down all public schools in Embo barangays unless it pays the costs of the school buildings during the meeting.

"That was the FIRST and ONLY matter she wanted to talk about. Mayor Cayetano was shocked and expressed disbelief at this threat," it said.

The Taguig PIO also claimed that Makati LGU ignored the request for the data on the number of students per grade level, number of city-hired school employees, types of benefits given to students and teachers, and other relevant information necessary for planning for Embo schools.

It reiterated that the Taguig local government heartily welcome their new constituents, and that it will work hard to expand and improve its services.

The Taguig PIO also said that the local government is fully prepared in extending the benefits to Embo students inlcuding free school supplies, uniforms, and shoes, as well as scholarships for students taking vocational course, two or four years courses, master's and doctorate degrees, and those reviewing for board and bar exams.

The Taguig LGU has started taking over the management of some public schools built by Makati City last Monday, August 14. Many parents have expressed their worry for the welfare of their children.

Earlier, Supreme Court (SC) Administrator Raul Villanueva said that Taguig still needs to secure a writ of execution before it takes over the 10 barangays from Makati City.
