Three overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were killed in the fire that broke out in a building in south Kuwait, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed on Thursday night, June 13.

According to DMW, the three Filipinos died from smoke inhalation. They are among the 11 affected OFWs who were reported earlier.

"Two other OFWs remain in the hospital and are in critical condition, while the remaining six are all safe and unharmed," the DMW said.

Meanwhile, the DMW said, "Secretary Cacdac instructed the Migrant Workers Office in Kuwait (MWO-Kuwait) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Welfare Office to coordinate their efforts with the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait (PE-Kuwait) under Ambassador Jose Cabrera for the repatriation of the three workers' remains."

It noted that Cacdac and OWWA Administrator Arnell A. Ignacio are personally reaching out to the families of the 11 OFWs while ensuring that they "will provide all the necessary assistance and support."

The fire reportedly started at about 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 (9:30 a.m., MNL) in the building that served as a housing and dormitory facility for foreign workers employed by the Kuwaiti construction company.

This has caused the deaths of 49 people and injured others, according to the Kuwait Interior Ministry.
