About three in every 10 adult Filipinos said their quality of life got worse over the past 12 months, according to the survey result of Social Weather Stations (SWS) released on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

In its poll conducted from June 26 to 29 during the administration of former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte, results showed that 31 percent said their quality of life worsened as compared to last year.

While 29 percent said their life got better, and 39 percent said their life remained the same as it was a year ago.

The June 2022 survey resulted in a net gainer score of -2 classified as “fair”, which is similar to the April 2022 results. The net gainer score is computed by subtracting the percentage of those who said their life got worse and better.

The June 2022 net gainers is 20 points below the “very high” net gainer score of +18 during the pre-pandemic in December 2019.

“The steady national Net Gainer score between April 2022 and June 2022 was due to increases in Metro Manila and Luzon outside Metro Manila (or Balance Luzon), combined with decreases in the Mindanao and Visayas,” SWS said.

Metro Manila remained “high” in net gainers score of +6, which is 2 points up from +4 in April 2022. The score in Balance Luzon also stayed “high” of +5 from +1.

Meanwhile, it stayed “fair” in Mindanao, although down by 3 points from -4 to -7. The Visayas remained “mediocre”, down by five points from -12 to -17.

Education groups

SWS said the net gainers among non-elementary graduates fell from “fair” in April 2022 to “mediocre”, down by 3 points from -9 to -12.

Elementary graduates rose from “mediocre” to “fair”, up by 6 points from -13 to -7. While it stayed at a “high” of +3 among junior high school graduates.

Alongside, it fell from “very high” to “high” among college graduates, down by 12 points from +14 to +2.

Hunger

The June 2022 survey found that 11.6 percent which translates to 2.9 million Filipino families experienced involuntary hunger or not having anything to eat at least once in three months.

As compared to April 2022 survey results, hunger fell from 15.96 percent among “losers” or adults whose life worsened, 11.4 percent among “unchanged” or adults whose life remained the same, and 9.2 percent among “gainers” or adults whose life got better.

The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 1,500 adults aged 18 years old and above.

About 300 adults participated each from Metro Manila, the Visayas, and Mindanao, and 600 in Balance Luzon.
