The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is targeting to send the first 50 Filipinos, who were evacuated from war-torn Sudan, back to the country this Sunday, April 30.

In an interview during Laging Handa Public Briefing on Friday, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega said they will provide the commercial flight from Cairo to Manila for the first batch.

"Itong unang 50, dapat makalipad na iyan by Sunday or Monday," he said.

The other 350 Filipinos, who are still on the border of Egypt and Sudan, are expected to be flown home on Monday, May 1.

The DFA Undersecretary said he will personally travel to Egypt on Saturday to personally assist the teams in the government's repatriation efforts.

Meanwhile, based on the latest count of the DFA, at least 496 Filipinos were safely evacuated from Khartoum, the capital of the war-torn country as of Friday.

The foreign affairs earlier said that there are about 696 Filipinos officially registered in Sudan.
