The Department of Health (DOH) advised the public to stay indoors and wear masks amid the volcanic smog (vog) coming from Taal Volcano, which has affected several areas in CALABARZON.

"Sa mga gantong panahon, mas maganda na huwag muna tayong mag-outdoor activities," DOH Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson Albert Domingo said during an exclusive interview in Damdaming Bayan on Monday.

Domingo clarified that the volcanic smog reaching as far as Metro Manila might contain different components.

However, it is still advisable for everyone to remain cautious and stay indoors, as this is the best option. It is also recommended to close windows and doors to prevent the smog from entering houses.

"Kung meron tayong N-95 mask or kahit KN-95 mask ay maganda masuot s’ya lalo na doon sa ating mga very young and very old, at tyaka kung mayroong hika o kondisyon sa baga," said Domingo.

"Tapos uminom tayo ng tubig, mag hydrate tayo," he added.

Additionally, residents near the volcano should comply with evacuation advisories from Local Government Units (LGUs) if given.

Domingo explained that the N-95 masks help with particulate matter, such as dust. However, one component of smog could be Sulfur dioxide.

Furthermore, if sulfur dioxide is the component present, authorities will advise on what steps to take to avoid exposure, as masks may not be able to block sulfur dioxide effectively.

If a person breathes in smog and does not have asthma or any existing throat or nasal conditions, they might still experience breathing difficulties.
