DOJ looks into possible involvement of MT Terranova in oil smuggling
by Alessandra C. Frianela04 August 2024

The Department of Justice (DOJ) mentioned that they are investigating the possible involvement of MT Terra Nova, the sunken tanker that caused an oil spill in Limay, Bataan and nearby provinces, in 'paihi' or oil smuggling.

In an exclusive interview with DZRH Executive Session, DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla revealed that there are intelligence reports indicating that the 'paihi' system came into play.

"Paihi" involves transferring oil from a large ship to smaller boats while at sea, thereby evading tax payments.

The Secretary explained that it remains a mystery why the oil tanker, which was headed for Iloilo, did not leave the waters of Bataan.

It is noted that the Terranova sailed for 26 hours before the tragedy occurred, which resulted in an oil spill during the height of Typhoon Carina.
