A policeman was beaten up by drunkards after he accidentally shot a civilian during a commotion in Quezon City at past midnight on Wednesday, August 9.

S/Sgt. Jaymart Errol Dawis, 32, who is assigned to the Batasan police station, is currently recovering from the wounds he sustained during the incident, which happened in Barangay Bahay Toro at around 1:30 a.m.

According to the investigators, Dawis and his companion, Ireno Christopher Casidsid, arrived on a basketball court where they found a group binge drinking.

A witness said Dawis confronted the people who were drinking and pulled out his service handgun and introduced himself as a policeman.

It was then that Fernando Vinluan, a 42-year-old real estate agent who was just passing by the area, lunged at Dawis and attempted to disarm him.

During the commotion, Dawis' fired the gun which striked Vinluan in the left palm and resulted in drunkards attacking Dawis and Casidsid.

Barangay public safety personnel took Vinluan, Casidid, and Dawis to a hospital for medical treatment right after the incident.

Police investigators recovered a bullet casing from a 9mm handgun at the scene of the shooting.
