MANILA, Philippines – The Korean government announced it has earmarked USD 500,000 or PHP 29.4 million as humanitarian assistance to victims affected by the recent typhoons, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea announced.
According to the Embassy of Korea, the humanitarian assistance will be delivered to the affected communities through the World Food Programme (WFP), “to support relief efforts in response to the recent typhoon damage in the Philippines.”
“The Korean government hopes that this assistance will contribute to the recovery of the affected areas and aid the swift return to daily life for residents in those regions,” the Embassy stated.
Foreign governments and humanitarian organizations have been ramping up missions and humanitarian response operations in the Philippines to deliver aid to thousands of affected communities, starting with Typhoons Julian, Kristine, Leon and Typhoon Nika recently.
Aside from monetary aid, assistance “in kind” are being brought in using military assets such as choppers and C-130 cargo planes from Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Australia sent its emergency food truck, called “Bluey” to Camarines Sur to provide cooked meals to affected families, while the United Stated Agency for International Development (USAID) sent 50 trucks carrying relief items and ready-to-eat meals to affected individuals in Bicol.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. also ordered the “full use” of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement sites (EDCA) for airlift operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
