Tropical Cyclone "Leon" intensified into a super typhoon as it continue to threaten the extreme northern Luzon, PAGASA reported on Wednesday.
In its 11 AM weather bulletin, the weather bureau reported that Leon was located 350 km east of Calayan, Cagayan. It has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h and gusts of up to 230 km/h, moving west-northwest at a speed of 10 km/h.
Tropical Wind Signal No. 3 are hoisted in the following areas:
- Batanes;
- eastern portion of Babuyan Islands; and
- northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan;
Residents in the area are warned of a moderate to significant threat to life and property due to the potential impacts of the winds.
Furthermore, TCWS No. 2 is in effect in the following areas:
- The rest of Babuyan Islands;
- The rest of mainland Cagayan;
- Northern and eastern portions of Isabela;
- Apayao;
- Kalinga;
- Northern and eastern portions of Abra;
- Eastern portion of Mountain Province (Paracelis); and
- Ilocos Norte
The potential impacts of the winds present a minor to moderate threat to life and property, prompting residents to take caution.
TCWS No. 1 is raised in the following areas:
- The rest of Isabela;
- Quirino;
- Nueva Vizcaya;
- The rest of Mountain Province;
- Ifugao;
- Benguet;
- The rest of Abra;
- Ilocos Sur;
- La Union;
- Pangasinan;
- Nueva Ecija;
- Aurora;
- Northeastern portion of Tarlac;
- Northern portion of Bulacan;
- Northern portion of Quezon;
- Camarines Norte;
- Northern portion of Camarines Sur; and
- Northern and eastern portions of Catanduanes.
Areas under TCWS No. 1 may experience winds that pose a minimal to minor threat to life and property.
Super Typhoon Leon is expected to move northwestward over the Philippine Sea before making landfall along the eastern coast of Taiwan tomorrow afternoon, October 31.
"Leon" will be nearest to Batanes from late this evening until tomorrow morning, and a landfall in Batanes cannot be ruled out.
The next tropical cyclone bulletin will be released at 2:00 PM today.
