"Look out, here comes the Spider-Man."
The beloved web-slinger is returning to his roots, with Marvel Entertainment's new Spidey series, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”
A nod to its early comic book roots, Marvel's new animated series takes inspiration from Peter Parker's early days in high school. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker was webbed between keeping up with school work and fighting crime in New York City.
In this alternate timeline, the web-slinger's roots are traced back to a mentorship by Norman Osborn (Green Goblin's alter ego), instead of Tony Stark.
Along with new animation style and timelines, the trailer released on December 30 also featured Marvel's first Filipino superhero, Pearl Pangan, a.k.a. Wave, bumping into Peter at Midtown High.
Created by Filipino comic book artist Leinil Francis Yu, Pearl made waves in the comics world when she made her debut appearance in the 2019 comic, “War of Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1.”
Wave is a swimmer from Mactan, Cebu, who showed Olympic-level potential in swimming from her early years. The Pinay superhero was recruited by AlonTech to participate in its science experiments, before gaining her superpowers.
The first Filipino superhero was celebrated for its representation and diversity back when she was first introduced, and quickly gained popularity among fans who were anticipating a superhero from the Philippines represented in mainstream comics.
The 10-episode series will be premiering on Disney+ on January 29, featuring familiar characters from the Spidey universe, like Aunt May, Otto Octavius, Norman Osborn, and many others.
