Customers of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) can see a lower electricity bill for July as the power distributor announced its latest power rate adjustment.

In a press conference on Monday, Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga announced that power rates will be reduced by ₱0.72 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

"The main driver... When was asked several weeks back kung ano ang forecast, I made a fearless assumption na bababa and nagkatotoo nga ang initial analysis namin. Ang reduction sa generation is ₱0.64 centavos per kilowatt hour, very slight adjustment sa transmission," he explained.

"Nadala 'yung taxes sa pagbaba ng generation charge at sa other charges ay meron ding slight reduction na ₱0.6 centavos per kilowat hour," Zaldarriaga added.

The ₱0.72 reduction will bring the following adjustments for typical households consuming 200 kWh to 500 kWh:

  • 200kwh - ₱144
  • 300kwh - ₱216
  • 400kwh - ₱288
  • 500kwh - ₱360

Meanwhile, the Meralco spokesperson reminded that only those customers, who are part of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), will be qualified to enjoy the lifeline rates.

"'Yung mga nakatira sa condo, subdivisions, and those who have a violation of Republic Act 7832 or the Pilferage law are no longer qualified for lifeline rates subsidies," Zaldarriaga added.

This is the first time in two months that the power rate slashed. Meralco earlier implemented power hike from May to June.
