The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday said it is planning to establish designated stops for public utility jeepneys (PUJs) and public utility buses (PUBs) in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City.
In a press release, MMDA Acting Chairman Carlo Dimayuga III said the designated stops aimed to ensure the safety of all road users.
“There should be designated bus and jeepney stops for passengers as part of road safety. It’s about time to instill road discipline among all passenger vehicles,“ he said.
The agency said the plan for the PUV stops was discussed during a preliminary meeting last Tuesday, Oct. 25.
The said meeting was attended by representatives of the Quezon City local government unit (LGU) and various jeepney operators namely Pasang Masda, Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations (ACTO), Stop and Go Transport Coalition, and UV Express Van Federation.
MMDA said the Quezon City LGU representatives and jeepney operators helped the agency to identify the loading and unloading areas and confine these to pedestrians, and come up with strategies on how the public utility vehicles (PUVs) could maneuver to their designated stops.
The agency said Pasang Masda President Obet Martin welcomed the plan and expressed his gratitude to the MMDA Acting Chief for the support he gave them.
On Oct. 19, the Metro Manila Council approved the establishment of exclusive bicycles, PUVs, and motorcycle lanes along Commonwealth Avenue to avert road incidents and promote the decongestion of traffic flow.
Under MMDA Resolution No. 22-15, the right outermost lane of the said avenue is designated as an exclusive bicycle lane. While the second lane and third lanes are assigned as jeep, UV express, buses, and motorcycle lanes, respectively.
The remaining lanes are designated for the use of all other motor vehicles.
