A large fire broke out in a residential area in Barangay 775, Sta. Ana, Manila, on Tuesday morning. Approximately 100 houses were destroyed, displacing around 300 families.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, the fire originated on the ground floor of a three-story house.

Fire Senior Inspector Alejandro Ramos, head of the arson unit of BFP Manila, stated that a left-behind candle is believed to be the cause of the fire, particularly since the house where it started had no electricity.

“Ang sabi niya, pinatulan siya ng ilaw ng kanyang kapitbahay dahil hindi siya nakakabayad. So ‘yung means ng kanyang ginawang liwanag is ‘yung kandila," Ramos said during an interview with the media.

“Yung kandila, nilagay niya daw po sa ilalim ng hagdanan and may nakataling aso doon and kumain lang po siya ng almusal then pagbalik niya doon may nagsabi sa kanya na nasusunog na ‘yung bahay niya," he added.

The fire, which started at 6:06 AM, resulted in more than 3 million pesos worth of property damage. It was declared "fire under control" at 8:46 AM after reaching the fourth alarm and taking a total of three hours to be contained.

No injuries or casualties were reported from the fire.
