Lily Monteverde, the revered film producer known as "Mother Lily," has passed away, her son, UP Fighting Maroons head coach Goldwin Monteverde, confirmed on Sunday.
Goldwin said Mother Lily died early that morning. She was scheduled to celebrate her 86th birthday on August 19.
The cause of death has not yet been released.
Mother Lily was a pioneering figure in Philippine cinema, serving as the matriarch of Regal Entertainment. Under her leadership, the company produced iconic films such as "Scorpio Nights," "Shake, Rattle, & Roll," "Relasyon," and "Mano Po."
In a statement, Regal Entertainment recognized the "extraordinary contributions and boundless passion" of Mother LIly for the film industry which left an indelible mark.
"Her extraordinary contributions and boundless passion for the film industry have left an indelible mark. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and all who were touched by her incredible spirit," the Regal Entertainment wrote in a social media post.
Her influence extended well beyond film production; she was instrumental in launching and nurturing the careers of numerous actors, affectionately known as the "Regal Babies." These included Alma Moreno, Gabby Concepcion, William and Albert Martinez, Snooky Serna, Dina Bonnevie, Ruffa Gutierrez, and the Diamond Star Maricel Soriano.
Her passing comes just days after the death of her husband, Leonardo "Remy" Monteverde.
Leonardo, who was 86, passed away on July 29 due to pneumonia. He was widely respected for his unwavering support of the local film industry.
Lily and Leonardo Monteverde are survived by their five children: Dondon, Roselle, Goldwin, Meme, and Winnie.
