The very slow effusion of lava coming from the Mayon Volcano’s summit crater has reached as far as 2,700 kilometers along Mi-si Gully in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Sunday.

The lava also continues to flow slowly along the Bonga Gully with a maximum length of 1,300 km.

The collapsed debris, meanwhile, has deposited up to 4,000 km along Basud Gully.

The state seismologist said it also observed 397 rock falls, 4 volcanic earthquakes, and 2 dome-collapse pyroclastic density currents (PDC) with 2 minute duration.

The country’s active volcano also produced steam-laden plumes that reached a height of 1,500 meters before it moved to southwest, south-southwest and northwest.

The Mayon Volcano also persistently emits sulfur dioxide that averaged 864 tonnes a day.

Phivolcs has yet lifted the Alert Level 3 over Mayon Volcano as it is “currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption within weeks or even days is possible.”

The Mayon Volcano has been placed under Alert Level 3 since June 8, 2023.

The state seismologist earlier said that the Mayon’s unrest may continue for the next months.

Phivolcs continuously remind Albayanos against possible hazards such as rockfalls or landslides or avalanches, ballistic fragments, lava flows and lava fountaining, PDCs, moderate-sized explosions, and lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.

As of July 2, Mount Mayon’s restiveness has affected over 41,000 residents in Albay province.
