The first-ever Premiere Volleyball Rookie Draft took place last night, where former La Salle star Thea Gagate was selected as the top overall pick.
The 6-foot-2 middle blocker will now play for Zus Coffee Thunderbelles, formerly known as Strong Group Athletics.
The Zus Coffee Thunderbelles are aiming to improve their performance after finishing their 2024 All-Filipino Conference campaign in 12th place without a single win. Gagate expressed her gratitude for the team's trust and vowed to help elevate their standing in the league.
"Of course, I'm very grateful and honored na ako yung first pick nila. Na-appreciate ko na na-appreciate nila yung efforts ko as an athlete," said Gagate.
"I just hope na they'll trust me and I'll do my best to lift the team and put their rank up."
During her UAAP career, the 23-year-old Gagate was instrumental in helping the Green Archers secure their title in Season 85. She was also named 1st Middle Blocker for three consecutive seasons, from Season 84 to Season 86.
In addition to Gagate, three other La Salle players were among the top four draft picks. Opposite hitter Leila Cruz was selected by Capital1, setter Julia Coronel by Galeries, and Maicah Larroza by Farm Fresh Foxies.
Out of 47 hopefuls, only 23 players secured spots in the professional league, marking a highly competitive and historic night for Philippine volleyball.
